Seventy-five years ago, an Oxford professor published a children’s story. Critics and friends alike were uncertain about how a story of talking animals, Greek mythological creatures, and Father Christmas might be received. But as it turned out, the tales of Narnia came to be beloved by both children and adults around the world, and reckoned by the millions. And now, in our own time, when Western Civilization is trapped in the ice and snow of Enlightenment thinking, Lewis’ stories break in like a spring thaw. Changing the metaphor, though many of us have been turned into stone through sin and failure, God’s people are encouraged by these stories to remember that we serve the God who is able to make stony hearts come to life.
